There are a number of reasons for this: A good Central Vacuum System (CVS) usually has a much larger motor – or, in instances, motors – than a residential “pull-around” canister vacuum or upright vacuum. This larger motor – or, motors – will typically provide more cleaning power than a standard residential vacuum.
A good quality CVS will provide between 125″ to 160″ of waterlift, and between 110 cfm to 180 cfm.
A good quality CVS will have a much larger dirt capacity. The increased dirt container size reduces emptying frequencies – typically once or twice a year. The increased size allows the vacuum to “breathe” better – helping it to produce and then maintain increased cleaning power.
A good quality CVS not only allows for the pollutants being cleaned from the rug, upholstery, drapes, floors, etc. in the house to be removed to a separate location, it will filter these same pollutants out of the exhaust air down to the microscopic particle size of .3 microns. Many canister or upright vacuums are spewing millions of these same microscopic pollutants per minute back into the room in which the vacuum is being used.
We are experiencing an unprecedented epidemic of allergies and asthma problems (internationally) – it is only common sense to successfully remove allergens from the indoor environment; not, to increase the airborne pollutants!
This type of critical filtration also serves to keep the motor(s) “whistle” clean. A clean motor runs with less vibration and heat and will, therefore, last longer.
It is fairly effortless to move around the house or office with a 30-foot to 35-foot hose. Most pull-around canister vacuums, etc. use hose of 5-ft to 6.5-ft. in length. It is suggested to install a soft “hose sock” on the outside of a CVS hose to protect molding & furniture.

A machine used successfully in demanding commercial applications will work wonderfully in regular residential use. As explained in our webpage on Central Vacuum System Information a good CVS always incorporates two, important design features: Cyclonic entry of dirt to maintain high airflow, as high airflow (along with good suction – i.e., waterlift) is critical to effective vacuuming, and, effective filtration to ensure clean exhaust air. Clean exhaust controls emissions of LDP (Lung Damaging Particles). Clean exhaust allows the motor(s) to last longer.
Our most popular CVS by far is the DuoVac Signature model 1530 which boasts 145″ waterlift & 102 cfm airflow. It provides Cyclonic action and a healthy-sized 7.5 gallon spun, brushed aluminum dirt container. The DuoFib filtration has 95% efficiency @ .1 micron (no venting needed), and the 7.2 inch 3-stage Lamb 117500-13 motor (110v 14.4 amp) is historically one of the largest in the business. It has internal noise-dampening baffles to provide quiet operation. Our customers love it!

Hose:
We think that, for those who need a motorized brush for carpet use, a 35-foot electrified Plastiflex hose with Dual-Voltage switch is one of the easiest, optimal hoses to use. Lightweight & durable, a 35-foot hose offers a bit more leeway & flexibility in use than a standard 30-foot hose. Full 360-degree swivel hose end at user end. Orthopedically formed grip for hand comfort and ease-of-use.
Dual voltage, thumb-operated switch on hose end allows user to instantly switch either main vacuum off or on or to switch power nozzle off or on. No need to go back to the wall outlet to remove hose end to turn main vacuum off. Switching off power nozzle enables quick cleaning of adjacent bare floor areas when initially cleaning carpets/rugs.
If a power nozzle is not used on the CVS because there is such little area covered with carpet, a non-electrified, 40-ft hose 24V only is recommended.

Motorized Power Nozzle:
Unequivocably we recommend the Lindhaus PB14 power nozzle. It has a 5,000 rpm, ball-bearing brush. This is a high brush speed for fast cleaning. Ball bearing design for no vibration and long brush life – probably 20 years! Large, central dirt intake. It improves cleaning performance when the dirt intake is centralized, as the convergent brush design sweeps dirt from either end of nozzle into the central intake. The least efficient design is to locate intake at the extreme end of revolving brush.
Precise sensor system:
Sensor system constantly monitors brush resistance and shuts off revolving brush if it jams or becomes unduly impeded. Such a system protects the belt from breaking and protects the motor. The belt has an initial warranty against breakage for 3 years! This also helps to protect a carpet fringe, etc. from being yanked out of the carpet.

Cleaning Accessories:
We suggest a good-quality set of accessories. We use an English-made accessory set that is the best in the industry. All bristles are typically natural material – rather than nylon which will scratch surfaces. The set includes: a combo rug/floor nozzle 12″ (good for small throw rugs, etc. as well as small tiled areas such as bathrooms), a horsehair-bristle bare floor brush, a full 360-swivel dust brush to facilitate dusting in difficult-to-reach areas, an aluminum, telescopic wand (aluminum keeps it lightweight to facilitate cleaning up on door sills, crown moldings, etc.), a long crevice tool (the extra bit of length helps in those difficult-to-reach areas), an upholstery nozzle with lint picker, a full-size plastic hose hanger (we don’t use the little cheapie hangers that are the norm – this hanger would virtually support a garden hose), a hanging tool caddy in which to store the accessory tools and wands, and a hose-sock to be installed on the hose – very important to help protect molding & furniture from being abraded by the action of hose being pulled around corners, etc.

Valves, pipe & fittings:
We use industry-leading manufacturers to provide the CVS outlets/valves, the pipe/tubing, and all the necessary fittings (90’s, 45’s, sweeps, tee’s, etc.)
Initially, in installing a Central Vacuum System, a choice has to be made as to whether the valve will have only 24V contact; or, 24V plus 110V (the latter for the power nozzle). If it is decided to use a dual volt (24V/110V) valve, a 110V romex “pigtail” has to be installed into each valve along with the necessary 24V (low voltage) wiring. In many cases, depending on building code, an electrician may be required to follow behind the vacuum installer to run the romex into each valve. This romex “pigtail” can be pulled from almost any, close electrical junction point, as the needed 110V to operate the power tool is usually less than 4 amps.
The quality of the tubing and fittings is important, obviously, as improperly extruded tubing will result in poorly fitting joints – and, thus, in leaks, separations, etc. We are in this section referring to PVC tubing and fittings – in some instances, all or part of a CVS install may require metal pipe and fittings.
One vital note of importance: Other than some more sophisticated, commercial central vacuum systems designed for large applications, the vacuum tubing and fittings used are 2″ O.D.Do not use plumbing tubing, as the outlets won’t fit when you go to tie the system in at the end ………………… 🙁
